Lon Chaney was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on 1 April, 1883 and died of cancer on 26 Aug 1930. He was survived by his second wife, Hazel Bennett, and his son Creighton Chaney, more commonly known as Lon Chaney Jr.

Both of Lon Chaney's parents were deaf mutes so he learned to communicate visually at an early age. He received his first movie role in 1913 and by his death in 1930, had appeared in over 150 films. His ability to use makeup to fit the part kept him employed before he was a star, but once he attained star status he kept on using makeup for many of his roles, most notably Mr. Wu, London After Midnight, as Quasimodo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame and also in the Phantom of the Opera. His performance in Phantom in 1925 is still considered the standard by which all other versions are judged. He worked with noted MGM director Tod Browning on many movies and Lon Chaney was set to play the part of Dracula before his untimely death in 1930. The role was then taken over by Bela Lugosi who made it one of the most memorable roles in screen history.

Chaney only made one talking picture before his death, 1930's remake of his 1925 silent classic The Unholy Three. He also starred opposite a young Joan Crawford in the 1927 classic The Unknown. All prints of the 1927 film London After midnight have been lost, presumably forever. This is considered by many film historians to be to be the most tragic loss of a silent classic over the years.
