Lon Chaney Jr. 1906 - 1973

Lon Chaney, Jr. was born as Creighton Chaney on 10 February, 1906 in Oklahoma City. His father was the silent film star Lon Chaney. The senior Chaney discouraged his son following in his footsteps but after his death in 1930, the young Crighton was free to pursue a career in film. He did try his hand at son writing for a few years but the draw of Hollywood soon became too much and in 1932 Crightan made his debut in the film "Girl Crazy". Four years later he changed his screen name to Lon Chaney, Jr. and finally in 1941, the fame he sought was realized from the breakout role of Larry Talbot, the tortured man who becomes a werewolf "when the wolfbane blooms". He played in Universal's classic horror cycle to the bitter end and the late 40's the demand for him waned dramatically. He ended up playing parts in low budget films with High Noon in 1952 being a huge exception. He also appeared as a guest in many television series including Route 66 and The Monkees. His last film was Dracula vs. Frankenstein in 1971. He died in 1973 in San Clemente after years of various illnesses and chronic alcoholism.
